Royal Watercolour Society Autumn Supper

Here we are at the RWS Autumn Supper on Sunday 3 November – it’s a wonderful society to belong to – we have 75  full members and at the moment about 6  Associates – we need more!! If you work in water based medium i.e. watercolour/acrylic/ ink/whatever on a paper based support and would like to show your work at Bankside Gallery with us – first apply for our Open Competition ( see the RWS website) and then maybe apply for Membership – if you’re London based even better. I’m a member but it took 3 tries – and several years of just either getting in to the Open or maybe not – in the end it’s worth it.Image

New Talent / Old Talent

In the Camden Review today, there’s an interview with Jonathan Miller who is going to have a show of his art works at The Cross Street Gallery N1 2BA starting November 8.

He says ‘ Of course you have to bring in new talent. I was once new talent. But they all think that when you become old talent you become old-fashioned talent. I’m just as good as when I was younger. In fact slightly better, because I’ve seen so much more’.

He’s referring to the world of television and film.

That’s what is good about the art world ( mostly ), where old talent is appreciated.

Well – it is raining but it’s not windy

Oh dear – storm/hurricane on the way. There is an enormous lime tree outside my house and if the hurricane blows from the south it will crash through the roof – no doubt about it. So fingers crossed please, and hope we’re still here in the morning!

Meet the Artists – Royal Watercolour Society Event

Bill Henderson, Michael Collins and me were at the Bankside Gallery yesterday with work / sketchbooks / etc to talk to visitors     ( if they wanted ! ) and show them the Autumn Exhibition. Michael was also showing the fascinating technique of egg tempera. There were lots of people there and they were all very complimentary about the gallery and the work. I created a ‘Ken Burns’ slide show and took Mac with me – also had music with it – so pleased had to curb my enthusiasm and try to remember banging on about it to the unconverted can be very boring – other Apple users are fine though!ImageImageImage

The Most Important Thing…….

Other people’s dreams are very boring but last night I had one of those when you know you have to be somewhere very important but for some reason it’s proving impossible. You try and try but time is running out and things are getting desperate – then I suddenly found I was on an old fashioned single decker bus, with those plush upholstered seats and we were going along a country road and I knew it would take hours and I would never get to the event. The bus conductor came to collect ticket money and I was saying ‘I shouldn’t be here, I don’t know how I got here, I’m not paying, I don’t want to be here’.

Then the person in the seat in front turned round ( he had round distinctive specs on and was a bit young fogeyish ) and said,

‘The most important thing is that there are friends on your bus’.

I burst out laughing and woke up.

Hurray for Apple!

Just back from One to One Session 4 at Apple Covent Garden. Now our entire library of images, mainly paintings is on my new computer.

When I think back to how expensive and difficult it used to be – either get professionally taken trannys ( maybe £25 ) or do them yourself on 35mm. You had to take the painting to the photographer and collect it – then you’d only have the one copy which you had to give to whoever it was who wanted to reproduce your work. Often it never got returned, so then if you’d sold the painting that was it – all a lot of hassle. Now with wonderful Apple, all the images are here – all I need to do is email them and I still have another copy!

Never thought I could be so enamoured by a computer.

Morning Glories at Kings Cross

Saw these from the bus yesterday and went back to take a photo today – sadly the sun wasn’t shining but I’ve never seen so many flowers. Really fabulous – they always remind me of those flower paintings where there are all sorts of flowers – tulips, roses, gorgeous colours and shapes and often a Morning Glory or two.Image

Early Ambitions!

My first book! It’s so funny to see this and it shows how people don’t really change – even at 7 or 8 ( think I was about that age ) I was a bit (!) of a control freak – I designed my cover, I was the publisher and writer  – but oddly I didn’t do the illustrations as well. The typography on the cover is quite way out.
