Good Friday Walk

Into Soho for a nice coffee and Pain au Raisin at Patisserie Valerie.

Bus to Victoria, then a walk down Vauxhall Bridge Road to Tate Modern.

My Great Grandfather, Thomas Goulden, was born here in 1862 – the family moved a year or so later to Vauxhall Bridge Road.

Tate Britain – empty this morning

Walked from the Tate along the Embankment to London Bridge, calling in to see the Royal Watercolour Society’s Spring Exhibition. Pleased to note 12 or so paintings sold, and the show runs until 20 April so there will be more sales over Easter.

By the time we reached the Embankment the sun had disapeared, but the River still looked magnificent.

The Royal Watercolour Society Elections and Spring Exhibition

Very busy few days at Bankside.

On Saturday about 30 Members of the RWS met in the gallery to elect ( hopefully ) some  new Associate Members. There were 29 applicants who had brought in 3 framed works, unframed works and sketch books or other relevant material. All work was carefully looked at by all Members and given A, B, C, D, E, F etc. Each of these letters equivalent to  so many points. These are then counted up and the six candidates with most points have their names written up on a blackboard. The each Member has an anonymous ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ vote. If a majority of Members present vote ‘yes’ then we have a new Member. If ‘no’ then the candidate is not elected. This process finished about 3pm and we have 4 new Members.

Bridget Moore / James Faure Walker / Jim Dunbar / Mike Middleton

Their paintings will be on show in the RWS Spring Show which opens at Bankside Gallery tomorrow (Thursday ).     Open daily 11 – 6    48 Hopton Street, SE1 9JH

The Royal Watercolour Society Open Competition 2013

The successful entries are on show at Bankside Gallery, 48 Hopton Street, London SE1 9JH, until the 3 March, from 11-6 every day.

You can also see the Prizewinners.

The exhibition shows a wide variety of subject matter and style – this is what makes it so interesting. It also reflects the work of the Royal Watercolour Society – the Members ( I am proud to be one of this elite band ) are very diverse in their sources of inspiration and the way that they translate this to paper. Figurative, abstract, immaculate, dynamic, interiors, city scape, landscape, still life – the one thing we have in common is that we use a water based  medium on a paper based support.

Go and look at the show and also come to our Spring Exhibition 22 March -20 April

A loaf of Bread

Bread

I made a loaf of bread, and since I have just watched the Oscars, I would like to thank my lovely sister Henrietta who gave me the book of recipes, Dan Lepard who wrote the book, Doves Farm flour, Hovis yeast, potatos everywhere, vinegar manufacturers, salt, whoever invented electricity – Michael Faraday?  – and everything else that aided me in my task, including Radio 4 who were babbling away in the background. You are all lovely and there’s definately no way I could have done this on my own. It tasted good too!

One day at a time

Just coasting along as usual, bit of this, bit of that when suddenly blasted into unknown territory – we need publicity/editorial at the RWS/Bankside Gallery so when I got a call from Garry Jenkins promoting the Bankside area, with the RWS in mind ……what else could I say but yes. Then I get a lovely Italian photographer – Christian Sinabaldi – all to myself for an hour. Fortunately I didn’t see his terrific photographs on his website ( full of famous people – great pics ) before he came over.

Thomas Heatherwick’s 38 bus

My first trip on the new 38 bus!

Been going on this route from Angel, Islington to Shaftesbury Avenue for a very long time.

The fare was 3d when I first used this bus – Thomas Heatherwick’s new design is fab – two staircases, nice upholstery, good lighting. It’s really exciting.

Sentimental Journey

IMG_4214

The etching above is by Edward Bawden and shows Liverpool Street Station in the 1930’s.

This station means a lot to me, because I grew up in Essex and it was the way in to London. We would come to London for treats like visits to Hamleys or maybe a musical like the Pajama Game or a Pantomime. The station then was very dirty and smelt of smoke / oil / and the surrounding factories of the East End. Now the station is bright and full of shops and coffee places, but the fantastic iron structure of the original building is still in place. I was early for my train so I went to say hello to the memorial to the children of the Kindertransport, and feel lucky to be able to travel where I want to and to go home again.
