The Thatched House

Our Grandparents, Bill & Nancy lived at The Thatched House. We called them Pop & Nanny. They built the house in the 1930’s and these photographs were taken for a magazine a few years later.

I remember my grandmother making Scotch pancakes on this stove - the dog's meals were boiled up here (no tinned pet food in those days) and every Sunday lunch

Sunday lunches (and all other meals were cooked on the stove ). The other piece of equipment is the boiler.

This is looking down the hall from the kitchen towards the drawing room

Elizabeth in Munich 1938

Drawing 1

In 1938 my Mother aged 18 went to live ‘en famille’ in Munich to learn German – she wrote this letter to her parents in November 1938.

My Week

IMG_0308 IMG_0309

Islington Gardeners outing to Painshill Park & then Wisley. We were supposed to be going to two gardens in West Sussex, but at the last minute had to re-arrange as high winds were forecast and the gardens have to close when that happens. So Painshill Park was really good – lots of interesting things to see, newly renovated walled garden, follies & temples galore. The Chrystal Grotto has also been restored and is quite amazing.

Then on to Wisley for lunch and dodging the showers visited the glasshouses with wonderful exotic plants.

Watched VE celebrations and thought about my parents and how they met in the war and what a great story that would make…….. and how we ( David,Max,Henrietta and me ) wouldn’t be here today unless they had.

Anxiously checked Hostas for slug and snail damage – I’ve watered on Nematodes, His Nibs has raised them off the ground and made moats round them etc, etc. So far OK but we’ve a long way to go!

Watercolour Etc Exhibition

The RWS Spring Exhibition looks very good and has been well received by both RWS Members and the public. The Bankside Gallery, near Tate Modern and The Founders Arms is open daily 11-6. Richard Bawden is the featured RWS Member. We also have a very beautiful painting by Barbara Rae RA who we invited to show with the RWS as Guest Artist.David Brayne is the winner of the Turner Prize 2015 (Special prize for water based media shared between the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours).

Watercolour Etc

The Royal Watercolour Society’s Spring Exhibition opens today at Bankside Gallery (between Tate Modern and The Founders Arms on the Southbank). The RWS was founded in 1804 by a group of artists who felt their work wasn’t getting a fair showing at the RA (Royal Academy) so they resourcefully started their own organisation and showed paintings together. So that’s over 200 years ago and while artists haven’t changed in their need to work and exhibit – the materials available have. This means members of the RWS today can exhibit work in any water based media as long as the ‘support’ i.e. what you paint on is paper based. In this exhibition for the first time ever – RWS artists are allowed to exhibit an ‘Etc’ in the form of a piece of work that does not meet the criteria above – so it could be sculpture, oil painting, photography or prints.

The RWS elected 6 new  Associate Members recently who will also be showing their paintings in the exhibition – so it will be even more exciting and innovative to visit and buy, which is what artists need!

I am looking forward to seeing the exhibition this evening – I was one of the team ‘laying out’ the works along with Bill Henderson (Chief Hanger) Francis Bowyer, Denis Ryan and Annie Williams. This took several hours with a good deal of lifting paintings and positioning them in the gallery – then changing what looked  good where etc. Then the Bankside Gallery’s excellent team of ‘Hangers’ have the task of actually hanging the works – some of which are very heavy and making sure spaces are equal, paintings straight etc. Phew! Quite a business.IMG_0116 IMG_0134
