My sister has brought up and cherished several chickens – last week she had just 2 left which were hatched out in or maybe on her AGA some years ago. Last week, someone who was visiting came with a dog, not on a lead, which jumped out of the car and made off to where the chickens were, grabbed one of them and it was nearly the end – however with a lot of care and time and effort on her part, involving special baths (for the chicken) medication etc, not an easy task with a chicken, Lucky was restored to health and had only just got back in the Ark with her sister when – today – the same person showed up again, with the dog, still not on a lead and anyway he had PROMISED not to bring the dog again EVER – it was Lucky’s sister who was attacked and this time there was no chance of recovery. So Lucky is now the lone survivor. How sad is that. Very, very upsetting.

Inexcusable behaviour. I feel so sad for your poor sister and poor Lucky. Lucky needs company – ideally not another chicken. When I was a child, our gander befriended the neighbour’s last remaining chicken, Henrietta. They had a few happy months together until Christmas, when the goose was cooked … poor Henrietta died before the New Year and I have been vegetarian ever since (about 60 years!)
I an assuming the dog owner was not a friend Jill, can ths kind of irresponsibilty be reported to the police to protect livestock? Too late for Henrietta’s fowl but if she wnats to home rescue hens? x
dam dogs.
this is one of the many reasons I prefer cats.
not because I don’t like dogs-its the control freaks who want to ‘own’ a dog.
it makes me so mad.
I had the same thing happen to my shop cat, betty,i had the shop for 18 years and betty walked in one day and lived there for 17 happy years until a man with a greyhound allowed his dog to chase and maul her -she spent the last week at home with me but her quality of life was such I had to make That Decision….so I know exactly how you feel.
I hope the man visiting your sister feels mortified.
