Another rainy day

Still raining but it has made the garden look fresh and green.
I can have a think about new paintings now and I’m off to see the Lucian Freud Portraits this afternoon…..

April Showers

We have a hose pipe ban in London and other areas of the UK. Since this was brought in earlier this month it has rained almost every day. This is good for the garden and everything looks really green and fresh.

I have some beautiful tulips  in containers outside, but I’ve picked some and have them in the house with the idea of painting them. Their names are very exotic – purple Havran; sophisticated red- crimson Couleur Cardinal with elegant blue silver leaves; Helmar  – straight out of a Dutch still life; Angelique, feminine and pink like a party frock; Bruine Wimpel- brandy snap brown and Antraciet, magenta – crimson peony flowered.

Painting and Cake making

Painting and cooking have quite a lot in common – you put in all the right ingredients and something good happens. If you don’t follow your own way/path / star whatever you like to call it, things go wrong.  I have a few events coming up for which I have to provide cakes rather than paintings – I spent yesterday afternoon making a cake (new recipe). The cookery writer assured her readers that the result would be delicious – I kind of felt some misgivings about this but as I had a tin of black treacle lurking at the back of my cupboard ( one of the required ingredients) I went ahead. Result was not good – in fact it was disgusting. So today I have reverted to Delia Smith’s brilliant recipe for a fruit cake from her book  Vegetarian Cooking and I know it will be good.

Then I finished a couple of my own recipes for a painting, so can only blame myself if they don’t work! I’ve kept the empty treacle tin and I’ll put it in my next picture.

Free and Easy

Didn’t Picasso say something like  ‘you spend a lot of time learning how to draw and then a lot more time forgetting what you’ve been taught ‘ ? That’s what I’m interested in right now – forgetting what you think you should do, and just doing it the way you feel is right.

Picasso did say ‘ All children are artists. The problem is to remain an artist once you grow up. ‘

I like that

Royal Watercolour Society Spring Exhibition

The RWS Spring Exhibition starts on Thursday 22 March, and

continues until 21 April. The PV is on Thursday 6-8pm.

The Hanging team ( including me) placed all the paintings yesterday

it took several hours. The team who physically hang the paintings are

at this moment working, as are the other wonderful Gallery staff who

sort out labels, price lists and all the other tasks that go towards an

exhibition.

Come along and see it!
